The M249 is an air-cooled, gas-operated, fully-automatic-only firearm that fires from an open bolt position. It can accept belts of linked 5.56x45mm NATO (.223) ammunition or M16-type magazines through the side-mounted port (in case the linked ammo runs out). The M249 is the Squad Automatic Weapon (SAW) of choice for the US Infantry. It replaced the M60 Machine Gun.
